“Skewed Maths exams favour top learners and handicap the below-average”
We, the Concerned Maths Educators (CME), are a network of Maths teachers in schools and institutions throughout South Africa. Our stance as educators is one of proactive and progressive participation. We are all dedicated and committed to improving mathematics education in South Africa.
Our Objectives - To make maths more accessible to ALL South African learners.
On Friday 8 February 2008 we met with the Department of National Education to consider two tiers of Maths in the new Mathematics curriculum as we felt that the current assessment system would not adequately cater for both the top learner as well as the below-average learner.
At the meeting held at the parliament buildings between a core group of mathematics teachers in our network and the advisor to the Minister of Education, Mr Martin Mulcahy, the Chief of National Examinations, Mr Nkosi Shisi and Thomas Masango the Chief Education Specialist for Mathematics it was decided that it was too late to effect any changes for the final examination in 2008 and we were invited to keep the lines of communication open for future meetings.
In the meantime we have established a nationwide Maths Forum where we as professionals can
• debate issues that affect us and the learners we teach;
• exchange ideas and resources and
• become an effective pressure group for change.
We have also established a dedicated maths website, www.mathsexcellence.co.za to achieve this goal.
We invite you to examine our arguments outlined in the article, entitled:
posted on our website: www.mathsexcellence.co.za and would like you to air your opinion regarding our proposals.

Hi Maths Teachers
I am exited about the new proposals for Paper 3 and the set-up of Papers 1 and 2. It makes good sense to me.
I have currently 17 Matric pupils taking Paper 3. Since Grade 11 we are conducting classes after school and one Saturday per month. Would like to know how schools are incorporating Paper 3 into the normal timetable.
Please keep me informed.
